What is Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery?

Heat recovery is the collection and re-use of heat arising from any process that would otherwise be lost. Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery provides a home with filtered fresh air in every room, all day every day. MVHR keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer and abstracts odours, moisture and airbourne pollutants which is particularly useful for allergies.

MVHR is now a requirement for all wooden structured new builds as they tend to be well insulated and airtight to provide maximum energy efficiency. MVHR helps the home to ‘breath’ in an economical way. Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery is the ideal system for a Passive House.

How does MVHR work?

MVHR draws in fresh air from the outside of the building, while extracting stale air from within the house at the same time. As the fresh air and stale air travel through the counter-flow heat exchanger inside the unit, the thermal energy from the used air can be taken and used to heat the fresh incoming air. The system recycles approximately 80% of the thermal energy from the air.

Caring for your MVHR system:

A Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery system is virtually maintenance free. It simply requires both filters to be cleaned annually. With some brands you can even put the filters in the dish washer. If you require any help, we are able to talk you through the simple process.
