I’m sure you’ve all heard of the Cat in the Hat? Well, it wasn’t just domestic pets in hats that Dr Seuss wrote about. He also wrote a wonderful story about a furry yellow thing called ‘The Lorax’; a strange creature who was guardian of the forest. He spoke for the trees, and tried to protect the forest from the greed of people.
The story goes that one day someone called ‘The Once-ler’ comes along with a successful new product that he makes out of ‘Truffula Trees’. He chops every last tree down to make more things to sell, and he gets richer and richer. Thneedville begins to be filled with ‘smogulous smoke’ (contaminated air) and ‘gluppity- glupp’ (contaminated water), and ‘schloppity- schlopp’ (toxic waste), there’s not a single piece of nature to be seen and the air smells bad. Eventually the Lorax and his animal friends have to leave because their homes are gone, there’s no food, and the air is poisonous.
Scarily, you might have drawn some parallels between Seuss’ Thneedville and Planet Earth in 2020!
Thankfully though, in both The Lorax, and in real life, a world full of smogulous smoke, gluppity glupp, and schloppity schlopp doesn’t have to be where the story ends. In fact, here at Eco Installer, we’re passionate about re-writing this story, and being part of the solution.
Recently, Greta Thunberg and George Monbiot released a video in which they pitched an earth- shattering solution to the world’s climate change problems (you can watch it here).
Monbiot says, “There is a magic machine that sucks carbon out of the air, it costs very little and builds itself. It’s called…a tree”.
Is it possible we’ve been so busy thinking of expensive and clever solutions to reduce carbon emissions that we’ve underestimated what’s right in front of us? That we’ve missed the cleverest solution, perhaps, of all?
As I write, I am sitting in my living room, the sun is streaming through my windows, dappled patterns paint my walls and floor as the sun’s rays beam through the leaves of the tree outside my house…*ahem* Sorry, should I say ‘the carbon sucking machine’ outside my house?
How often do we sit in our homes and read endlessly about the state of our climate, read desperate tweets from celebrities about the state of the world, or watch David Attenborough talk about the species which are becoming extinct, and wish we could do something to help? And so, we promise to ditch clingfilm for tupperware, or we pledge that the next car will be electric, stand in the street with our cardboard sign, or shake our fists at the government for not doing more… forgetting that right outside our windows are glorious, majestic, carbon- sucking machines, that we could be doing much more with.
Here at Eco Installer, we believe in a two -pronged attack, as it were. We not only offer renewable heating and cooling solutions for your home, so you can join the 300 people in East Anglia, who have already turned their back on Fossil Fuels with us, but, we ALSO pledge to plant a tree in your garden (or through an equivalent scheme, if that suits you better) to offset the carbon we emit during your installation, and to further offset the carbon footprint of your community. On top of that, we are looking for opportunities to get actively involved in local tree planting to benefit our local community.
Trees are the medicine of the earth. A new tree is to a hurting planet what the salve is to the wound, or the medicine is for the sick. Help us to make the world well again.
If the Lorax were here, we’re sure he’d be proud of us, and proud of YOU for making the change.
“UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better. It’s not.
SO… Catch! Calls the Once-ler. He lets something fall.
It’s a Truffula Seed. It’s the last one of all!
You’re in charge of the last of the Truffula Seeds.
And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs.
Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care.
Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air.
Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack.
Then the Lorax and all of his friends may come back.”
Dr Seuss, “The Lorax”, 1971
